Nashville Soccer Club has signed attacking forward Tyler Freeman to a four-year contract, via free agency.

Freeman is coming off a career-year where he scored eight goals in 24 appearances for Loudoun United FC of the USL Championship last season and played a 45-minute stint with Major League Soccer club D.C. United.

Loudoun, an affiliate team of D.C. United, sent Freeman to the country’s capital as Black-and-Red took on Flower City Union in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on April 19.

The 19-year-old is a product of the Sporting Kansas City Youth Academy. Playing since age 11, he became the second youngest player in Sporting Kansas City history to sign an MLS contract at the age of 15. Freeman made 35 appearances for Sporting Kansas City II during his time with the club.

At the international youth level, Freeman has represented the United States with their U-14, U-16 and U-17 national teams. He was instrumental in helping the U.S. to a second-place finish in the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship.

Nashville SC kicks off their season on Feb. 25 as they host NYCFC at GEODIS Park.

Nashville Soccer Club has signed veteran defender Laurence Wyke to a one-year contract with club options for the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Wyke began his professional career with Atlanta United FC after playing two seasons collegiately at Furman University. In his first professional season, Wyke made 29 starts over 26 appearances in the USL Championship, leading the team in tackles (67) and duels (305).

The past two seasons, Wyke has been a mainstay for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the USL Championship where the defender made a total of 66 appearances with six goals and eight assists. Wyke anchored a Rowdies backline that finished at the top of the table in the 2021 regular season.

Nashville Soccer Club selected 2023 Generation adidas defender Joey Skinner, defenders Sean Suber and Makel Rasheed, forwards Alex Meinhard and Lyam MacKinnon, and midfielder Rory O’Driscoll in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, presented by adidas.

Nashville added Skinner with the 11th overall pick after acquiring the pick from Charlotte FC via a trade on Dec. 12, 2021. Skinner played his sophomore season at Clemson University, appearing in every match for the Tigers in 2022. The defender transferred from UNC Greensboro, in which he was a first-team All-SoCon selection as a freshman in 2021, scoring four goals and registering seven assists, while anchoring the program to the best goal differential in the country (+38) and 10 clean sheets.

In the Second Round, Nashville SC selected defender Suber with the sixth pick. Suber played three seasons at UNC Charlotte, appearing in 37 matches. In his senior season, he was named Team Captain and guided Charlotte to its best start in program history with victories in each of its first seven matches.

With the second selection in the Second Round, Nashville SC selected forward Meinhard from the University of Tulsa. A prolific collegiate scorer, Meinhard recorded 29 goals in 39 appearances for Tulsa, including double-digit goal scoring efforts in back-to-back seasons. The attacker was selected as The American Offensive Player of the Year in 2021 and was First-Team All-Conference this past season.

Nashville SC had three selections in the Third Round, beginning with defender Rasheed from Xavier University. Rasheed played his senior season at Xavier after transferring from the University of Indianapolis. Across his four-year collegiate career, Rasheed appeared in 63 matches.

With the second selection in the Third Round, Nashville SC selected O’Driscoll from the University of New Hampshire. O’Driscoll made 63 appearances with 19 goals in four seasons.

The final selection of the night was forward MacKinnon from Villanova University. In three seasons for the Wildcats, MacKinnon scored 15 times in 49 appearances.

Nashville SC, alongside MLS, have announced the schedule for the 2023 season. The team will host New York City FC as the first match of the MLS Is Back weekend in a nationally televised match on FOX and Fox Deportes on Feb. 25.

After a spending last season in the Western Conference, Nashville SC returns to the East, and will host 10 Eastern Conference teams in their first-ever trip to GEODIS Park this season. The Boys in Gold will also host southern rival Atlanta United FC on Saturday, April 29 in a nationally televised contest on FOX and Fox Deportes at GEODIS Park.

The fixture marks the second of four nationally televised matchups for the Boys in Gold, all set to be played in Music City. Nashville will also host the Columbus Crew on May 28 and Orlando City SC on Oct. 4 on FS1 and Fox Deportes.

Fans will also get a chance to see Nashville SC host thrilling matchups at GEODIS Park against teams such as the 2022 MLS Cup Champions LAFC on April 22 and defending Concacaf Champions League Champions Seattle Sounders FC on Sept. 30.

Rivalry Week returns to MLS this season in a slate of matches across the week of May 13-20, in which the Boys in Gold will visit Charlotte FC for the second time in club history at Bank of America Stadium on May 20. The Boys in Gold will also host the newest MLS expansion side, St. Louis CITY SC, at GEODIS Park on June 17.

In a monumental new chapter for North American soccer, beginning in 2023, all 47 MLS and LIGA MX clubs will compete in a completely reimagined Leagues Cup: an annual, month-long, Concacaf-sanctioned tournament. Leagues Cup 2023 will make history as the first major soccer tournament to feature every club from a pair of top-flight leagues. The MLS regular season will pause following the July 15 games for Leagues Cup play and resume on Aug. 20.

This season will also be the first season that MLS will broadcast its games via Apple TV+ through the MLS Season Pass that features every live MLS regular-season match, the entire playoffs, and the Leagues Cup, all with no blackouts.

Starting Feb. 1, Nashville SC Season Ticket members will have access to their MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app. A subscription to MLS Season Pass will be included with each full-season ticket account. Other fans can subscribe for the price of $14.99 per month during the season or $99 per season, and Apple TV+ subscribers can sign up at a special price of $12.99 per month and $79 per season.

Nashville SC had a historic season in 2022, clinching its third-straight spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs, opening their permanent home at GEODIS Park and superstar Hany Mukhtar winning the Golden Boot and league MVP.

Huntsville City FC Announces Isaiah Johnston As First Player Signing

Huntsville City Football Club has announced Isaiah Johnston as its first-ever player signing ahead of the club’s inaugural MLS NEXT Pro Season, which is scheduled to kick off in the spring of 2023.

Johnston’s MLS NEXT Pro professional contract is pending league and U.S. Soccer Federation approval, as well as the receipt of his ITC and work authorization. The financial terms of the transaction will not be disclosed.

“Isaiah is a talented young midfielder who has the qualities we look for in a potential first team player for Nashville SC. In many ways, he embodies the project behind Huntsville City FC as a talented prospect who has the potential to influence winning, and will continue to grow and make strides in MLS NEXT Pro with HCFC,” says Mike Jacobs, General Manager of Nashville SC and its affiliates, including Huntsville City FC.

As an affiliate of Major League Soccer club Nashville SC, Huntsville City FC players may see an opportunity to move to Huntsville’s parent club throughout the season.

“I’m so excited to be joining the first professional football club in the beautiful city of Huntsville, Alabama,” Johnston shares. “Being the first signing in club history means everything to me, as the club has showed faith in my abilities as a footballer and I will give everything to keep that faith in them and for the fans of Huntsville. Thank you for all the support we have already received. I can’t wait to get started and play in front of all our Huntsville City FC enthusiasts!”

At just 20-years old, Johnston joins Huntsville City FC as one of the most regarded soccer prospects in Canada. The midfielder from Milton, Ontario spent the past three seasons playing for his hometown club of York United FC in the Canadian Premier League, where he amassed 53 professional appearances across all competitions. In 2021, Johnston led York United FC to the playoffs, which earned him the honor of appearing as one of the CPL’s Next Gen stars, an award that celebrates the best of young Canadian talent.

Prior to joining the Toronto-based club as a 2019 CPL-U SPORTS Draft pick, Johnston spent his freshman year at Cape Breton University where he won the Atlantic University Sport Rookie of the Year Award after claiming the national bronze medal.

Former Nashville SC Player Liam Doyle Named Huntsville City FC Director Of Soccer Operations

Huntsville City Football Club has appointed former Nashville Soccer Club player in the USL Championship side Liam Doyle as Director of Soccer Operations for the MLS NEXT Pro club.

Doyle joins Managing Director of Business Operations Chad Emerson in the front office for Huntsville City FC’s inaugural season.

“We are delighted to have Liam play a role in Huntsville City FC,” says Mike Jacobs, General Manager of Nashville SC and its affiliates. “His extensive playing experiences, and specifically with MLS second teams, is a huge asset to add to our group in its first season as an expansion club. Coupled with his passion and enthusiasm, he will be a tremendous asset to our group.”

Doyle returns to a familiar organization and leadership group after playing for Nashville SC in the USL Championship during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. The former Nashville SC player brings an extensive understanding of the second and third divisions in the U.S. Soccer landscape, having played for Penn FC (formerly the Harrisburg City Islanders), Sporting Kansas City II (formerly Swope Park Rangers), Memphis 901 FC, San Antonio FC, and most recently LA Galaxy II where he served as the team’s captain for the 2022 season.

In his role, Doyle will use that expertise and knowledge to provide strategic leadership and oversight of soccer operations. Additionally, he will assist with player identification, and supply day-to-day updates and collaborating on all operations with the Nashville SC technical staff.

“I’m thrilled to be rejoining the Nashville SC organization and its MLS NEXT Pro affiliate team in Huntsville,” Doyle adds. “Having a familiarity with the organization is something in which I take pride and hope will help this team’s success, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have the ability to continue learning from this group in the next step of my soccer career.”

Huntsville City FC will make Joe Davis Stadium in northern Alabama its home following completed renovations in May 2023.

GEODIS Park To Host 2023 SheBelieves Cup With USWNT, Brazil, Canada & Japan

After its inaugural season, GEODIS Park is set to host two games at the eighth annual SheBelieves Cup on Feb. 18 between the U.S. Women’s National Team (USWNT) and Japan, followed by Brazil vs. Canada.

The double header at GEODIS Park will be the first international soccer games hosted at the home of Nashville SC. The first game between the U.S. and Japan will be at 2:30 p.m. CT, while the Brazil vs. Canada match will kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT. Pre-sale for the 2023 SheBelieves Cup is happening now with the public sale beginning on Dec. 20. Tickets purchased will be valid for both matches on Feb. 18.

The SheBelieves Cup is part of U.S. Soccer’s SheBelieves initiative to inspire and empower women and girls to achieve their goals in sports and beyond. All four nations will participate in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup next summer, and all are ranked in the top 11 in the world with the U.S. at No. 1, Canada at No. 6, Brazil at No. 9 and Japan at No. 11.

The USA, perennial South American and Asian powers of Brazil and Japan, and the reigning Olympic Gold medalists in Canada will use this tournament as important World Cup preparation before the competition kicks off in Australia and New Zealand.

“The first five games of the 2023 schedule will all be against teams playing in the World Cup and we expect to confirm a few more matches against top opponents before we go to New Zealand during the summer,” says USWNT head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “We love the SheBelieves Cup for the world class competition it brings, the format that helps replicate group play at a World Cup and the overall meaning that it has for our team and women’s sports.” He continues, “Obviously, you get more rest days in a World Cup, but managing a roster with three games over seven days against teams with three very different styles of play is really good preparation for us as we continue to grow as a team towards next summer.”

For the Cup’s 2023 edition, the tournament will return to its traditional three venue format with matches played at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida; GEODIS Park in Nashville; and Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

The matches of the 2023 SheBelieves Cup will be the first domestic games of the World Cup year for the USWNT, which will play two games in and against New Zealand in January.
