U.S. Men’s National Team To Play First World Cup Qualifying Match At Nissan Stadium

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is set to face Canada in a 2022 World Cup Qualifier at Nissan Stadium on Sept. 5. Overall, Team USA has amassed a 4-2-1 record throughout its matches in Nashville.

“We know that one of the things critical to our success in World Cup Qualifying is having a strong home crowd and winning our home games,” says USMNT Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “When I think about the stadium, the field, and a crowd that’s full of energy, there’s no better place to kick off our home World Cup qualifying series than in Nashville. It’s a vibrant city and we look forward to playing there.”

The USA began its march to the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup title by playing to a 1-1 draw with Panama in front of 47,622 fans in Nashville –then a record attendance mark for soccer in the state of Tennessee. A year later, more than 40,000 fans witnessed the first international goal by Tyler Adams and a stout U.S. defense deliver a 1-0 shutout victory against regional rivals Mexico. Most recently, the USA endured muggy conditions and an 88-minute weather delay in the middle of the first half to overcome Jamaica 3-1 in the semifinal of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Nashville’s match against Canada is part of the “triple date” to open World Cup Qualifying during which the U.S. will play three matches over seven days. The campaign kicks off with the USMNT traveling to face El Salvador on Sept. 2 at the 53,000 seat Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador. Three days after the Canada game, the USMNT takes on Honduras in San Pedro Sula.

Under the new qualifying format, a total of eight teams will compete in the Final Round, with the top three teams advancing to Qatar ’22. The fourth-place team will participate in an Intercontinental playoff for the last spot.

More information regarding kick-off and ticket sales will be announced soon. FS1, UniMás, and TUDN will carry the match live at 7 p.m. CST.

3 Nashville SC Players Called-Up For 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup

Nashville SC’s Walker Zimmerman (United States), Alistair Johnston (Canada), and Aníbal Godoy (Panama) have been called up for this month’s CONCACAF Gold Cup.

All three players will join their respective squads after Nashville SC hosts Philadelphia Union on Saturday (July 3). Zimmerman and the six-time Gold Cup Champions USMNT will compete in Group B along with Johnston and Canada in Kansas City on July 11. Canada and Martinique will face off in the first match of the day, and both the USMNT and Canada will remain in Kansas City for the Group Stage.

The 2020 Major League Soccer Defender of the Year has played the full 90 minutes in six of his last eight matches with the USMNT, posting six shutouts with three of them during the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Johnston has been a mainstay for the Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team since bursting on the scene after a sensational MLS rookie campaign in 2020. The 22-year-old defender earned his first international call-up in January 2021 and has now accumulated five caps, all of them wins.

International veteran Godoy will lead Panama in Group D alongside Honduras, Grenada, and Qatar in Houston. Panama will take on Qatar on July 13 and then travel to Orlando, Fla. to face off against Grenada on July 20. Godoy earned his 105th international cap last night (June 30) as Panama faced Mexico in an international friendly at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. In his last six appearances with Panama, they have amassed a 4W-1L-1D record with their most recent win being against Curaçao as part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier for CONCACAF.

Nashville SC has extended their contract with Venezuelan international forward Jhonder Cádiz for the remainder of the 2021 season. Cádiz was originally brought in on loan by Nashville SC on Sept. 9, 2020 from Portuguese powerhouse S.L. Benfica as one of the club’s Designated Players.

“Jhonder has produced positive signs on and off the field during his time with us, and we are encouraged to be able to extend his loan,” says Nashville SC General Manager Mike Jacobs.

Prior to arriving in Music City, Cádiz spent time with S.L. Benfica before going on loan to Dijon FCO in Ligue 1, France’s top division of soccer, in 2019. While in France, Cádiz became the fifth Venezuelan player to score in Ligue 1 over the past 50 seasons when he netted the winning brace in a 2-1 victory over 2020 UEFA Champions League Finalist Paris Saint German on Nov. 2, 2019.

At the international level, Cádiz has made four appearances for the Venezuelan National Team. The striker’s debut came at 23 years-old on Oct. 16, 2018 in a 2-0 victory over United Arab Emirates. “This is another great step forward for Nashville Soccer Club, on the back of the incredible progress made in completing our Youth Academy and the ongoing work on our outstanding new stadium, this is to some degree the final piece in the club’s infrastructure jigsaw,” says Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre. “This practice facility will become the day-to-day workplace for our players and staff and will provide first class facilities for them to prepare for games day in, day out. It’s also important to say that we continue to feel proud to invite minority and disadvantaged businesses to be part of our journey both on our stadium construction and on this project where Moody Nolan and Pinnacle construction will play a key role in delivering this complex in the Antioch area, which is a key community for us and for soccer.  This commitment comes from the top down with our ownership and our club being completely committed to embracing local, minority and disadvantaged businesses and communities in all areas.”

“We’re proud to be able to show people our early vision for the training complex,” says Brian Tibbs, managing partner and director of Nashville Operations for Moody Nolan. “We will definitely share more details as they become available, but I expect fans in the Southeast community will be encouraged with what they see so far.
