For the second season in a row, Nashville Soccer Club’s Walker Zimmerman has been named MLS Defender of the Year.

Zimmerman was one of the key components of the club’s historic success, leading the charge to an undefeated season at home and being tied for first for goals against (33), away goals against (15), and clean sheets (13).  In 2021, he played 2,041 minutes, scored three goals, and had an accurate pass percentage of 82.7%.

“Walker’s contributions and leadership to our team has helped transform a second-year expansion club into one of the elite defenses in Major League Soccer, and no one is more deserving of this distinguished honor. We are so proud of him,” says Nashville SC General Manager Mike Jacobs.

Nashville SC traded for Zimmerman in February of 2020 for $1.25 million after he spent two seasons with Los Angeles FC. Since then, he has been one of the best players in the league and has been the backbone for the club’s success in its first two seasons of existence.

“I’m extremely grateful to be named this year’s MLS Defender of the Year,” shares Zimmerman. “Individual accolades aren’t possible without the quality of teammates I have here in Nashville and the success we’ve had collectively as a group throughout our entire roster. It’s a special moment for me and an honor I’ll cherish forever. I’m thankful to everyone who voted from the players, the executives and the media, and to the fans in Nashville for their constant support.”

Zimmerman joins an exclusive list, becoming just the third player in MLS history to win the award in back-to-back seasons and the first in over a decade. Chad Marshall, while with the Columbus Crew, won the award in 2008 and 2009. Zimmerman was named to the 2021 MLS All-Star Team and was selected to the MLS Team of the Week four times this season.

The club ended the regular season with a record of 12-18-4 and third in the Eastern Conference. Nashville’s season ended on Sunday, Nov. 28 after the club lost to Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout.

After a historic season in only its second year of existence, Nashville Soccer Club was knocked out of the MLS Cup Playoffs after losing to Philadelphia Union in a penalty shootout.

This was the second consecutive year that Nashville fell in the conference semifinals of the MLS Playoffs.

“I’m going to be honest and say it’s a crushing blow to lose in that manner,” said head coach Gary Smith. “The game played out as many of us had expected, very competitive. But quite honestly, I felt as though we carved out and created enough what we would [call] ‘off-chance moments.’ But on the day, we were unable to find the right craft or quality to win the game inside the 120 minutes.”

After a physical and high-energy match, the game ended with a score of 1-1. MLS MVP finalist Hany Mukhtar scored NSC’s only goal at the 38th minute. In extra time, neither team proved triumphant, which lead to a penalty shootout.

Nashville failed to score on any of the four penalty shots taken, while Philadelphia scored two out of the three shots they took.

“Cruel way to go out for sure,” said Walker Zimmerman in the postgame press conference. “Locker room, as you can imagine, is pretty quiet, pretty disappointed. I think that’s just because we know we have a really good team. We know we had a really good opportunity to move on.”

The club finished its final season at Nissan Stadium with a first round playoff win against Orlando on Nov. 23. The team will now be moving to its new home at the Nashville Fairgrounds.

This upcoming season will be different for the club and its fans as Nashville will move to the Western Conference after playing its first two seasons in the Eastern Conference. The upcoming MLS season will also be starting earlier on Feb. 26, meaning next season isn’t too far off.

“Our plan is to have a decent night’s sleep tonight and hopefully come in on Tuesday with a clearer mind, if not still a little bit of disappointment, but a little clearer,” said Smith. “There are some conversations to be had and we’ll make sure that everyone’s ready and prepared to finish up the season, say some last few words, and get some good rest. Because the next season will be right around the corner in six weeks.”

Mukhtar’s Two Goals Leads Nashville SC To 3-1 Win Over Orlando

In front of a packed Nissan Stadium, Nashville SC punched its ticket to the second round of the MLS Cup Playoffs last night (Nov. 23) after beating Orlando City FC 3-1 behind Hany Mukhtar’s two goals.

Nashville fell behind early after Orlando’s Daryl Dike scored in the 14th minute off of a beautiful corner kick by Mauricio Pereira.

But in typical fashion, the goal didn’t faze NSC who played tough to level the game at 1-1 in the 21st minute with a goal by Mukhtar.

“We certainly had some good moments and dictated the game for good periods and so did they,” said head coach Gary Smith in a postgame press conference. “But it wasn’t until Hany scored that second goal–which was a tremendous individual moment–that it really separated the groups and gave us an opportunity to feel that there was a chance that we’re gonna win this game.”

In the second half, both teams fought to put shots on goal and Orlando would go on to possess the ball 65% of the time.

But that didn’t matter in the 74th minute when Mukhtar scored his second goal of the night, giving Nashville the lead and the eventual win.

“That’s what’s good about our team,” said Mukhtar. “It’s not about the individual. In the end, one has to score, but we know that we have to fight for each other. We have to give everything.”

Goalkeeper Joe Willis gave up only one goal and one save, proving the excellence played by Nashville’s defensive lead Walker Zimmerman. NSC won over 56% of the duels in the second half.

In stoppage time, Jhonder Cadiz scored the club’s third goal of the night, solidifying Nashville’s dominant performance and comeback victory.

“I can’t stress to you what that does to the mentality of a team, when you go away game after game after game against some tough teams. You’ve got to roll your sleeves up, you’ve got to work hard,” said Smith.

The Boys in Gold will head to Philadelphia this Sunday, Nov. 28 to face the Philadelphia Union who is coming off a 1-0 win against the New York Red Bulls.

Nashville played Philly twice this year, winning the first meetup 1-0 and losing the last one on Oct. 23 1-0.

The match will air on ESPN at 4:30 p.m. CT.

New Nashville SC Stadium Set To Open One Month Ahead Of Schedule

Nashville SC’s new stadium at the Fairgrounds will be completed a month ahead of schedule. The club will play its first game at its permanent home against the Philadelphia Union on May 1, as announced by Nashville SC CEO Ian Ayre this morning (Nov. 22).

“Thanks to the 600 workers we have on sight right now and the fantastic work by them and others, we’re able to announce that the stadium will now finish almost a month ahead of schedule,” Ayre shared at a press conference. “Which, in turn, means we can play all of our 2022 home games here at this stadium… We’re so thankful to all of the people that have made this happen. There are too many to mention, but it’s an exciting day for the club.”

The stadium will be the largest soccer specific stadium in the United States. It has also proven to be a key factor in the success of the club’s early years as they have sold close to 20,000 tickets

“I know for our fans, everyone is going to be super excited for that opening game,” added Ayre. “I can tell you demand has been huge. Ninety percent of our premium seats have sold out and around 18,000 season tickets sold already.”

The club’s first match of the 2022 season will be on Feb. 27 as the Boys in Gold visit Seattle Sounder FC. They will play on the road for the first two months of the regular season before coming home and opening the newest cathedral of Nashville sports.

“Whether you’re a football fan, a hockey fan, or a soccer fan, the stadium your team plays in is the real spiritual home of the club,” Ayre summed. “Nashville’s proven with the Predators and the Titans that these stadiums are where it’s all about. It’s where you come and create those memories that you have forever.”

Nashville will finish out its 2021 season at Nissan Stadium as the MLS Cup Playoffs begin. The club hosts Orlando City FC on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m. CT.

Nashville SC Partners With Hyundai As Official Automotive Sponsor

Nashville Soccer Club has reached a long-term partnership deal with Hyundai moving into the 2022 campaign. Hyundai now joins an exclusive group of Nashville SC founding partners and will serve as Nashville SC’s official automotive partner.

The official jersey sleeve patch on Nashville SC home and away jerseys will now feature the Hyundai logo, making NSC one of only a handful of teams in MLS to have a jersey sleeve partner. Hyundai’s logo has been on Nashville SC’s jersey sleeve in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons on an interim basis and now the automaker will be the club’s permanent sleeve partner.

“Hyundai has played such an important role in Nashville SC’s success since our MLS launch last season and it will be fitting to have Hyundai on our sleeve when we open our new home next spring,” says Will Alexander, chief revenue officer of Nashville SC.

Nashville SC and Hyundai have maintained a successful partnership since the club’s inaugural MLS season in 2020 and will continue towards 2022 and beyond with the arrival of Nashville SC Stadium.

“Hyundai and the Nashville Hyundai dealers are excited to be a founding partner of the Nashville Soccer Club,” says Paine Bone, president, Nashville Hyundai Dealers. “The growth and community engagement NSC has brought to our area echos our own history and makes this a perfect partnership, which we look forward to continuing for many years to come. Hyundai is proud to have the prominent jersey sleeve patch position and look forward to the first match at the new stadium when our permanent signage will be unveiled.”

Hyundai will have permanent signage in the stadium bowl, sponsored gates on the east side of the stadium, and be the presenting partner of Nashville SC’s Hero of the Match, which celebrates veterans and community leaders in Nashville.

Broadcaster John Freeman is leaving his posts at Nashville SC and the Belmont Bruins to take the role as Director of Broadcasting at the University of Virginia.

Freeman has served as the radio play-by-play voice for NSC for two years and started out as the TV voice of the club in its final two seasons in the USL. This past summer, he was named the new lead broadcaster of the Belmont Bruins, taking over men’s basketball play-by-play from Kevin Ingram.

“I have cherished every moment broadcasting games for this club,” says Freeman in a statement to NSC fans via Twitter. “I won’t look back at calling NSC games as a part of my career. This has been part of my life. This club brings me so much joy, purpose, and room to grow. Most importantly, it has brought me so many wonderful people.”

Belmont University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Corley also released a statement regarding Freeman’s announcement to leave Belmont.

“As someone who has worked closely with John for four years, I can speak firsthand to his passion for telling Nashville SC’s story,” says Wes Boling who serves as NSC’s radio color commentator. “We all heard his memorable calls, but few saw the rigorous preparation John poured into every match, from a midweek USL match against a reserve squad to the club’s long-awaited MLS debut.”

Boling continues: “He cared deeply about capturing every moment perfectly, and he cared even more about his colleagues in the booth and behind the scenes. I’ll miss working with John, who has been an integral part of my NSC experience. But I couldn’t be happier to see him seize an opportunity he richly deserves.”

A 2009 graduate of UVA, Freeman has called Virginia basketball games in the past, including men’s basketball games during the NCAA Tournament in 2019.

He has been honored four times for Best Sports Coverage in the State of Virginia by the Associated Press. He was also named top sports broadcaster by the Charlottesville Daily Progress.
